A Musical Performance and Unique Collaboration Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
This special concert by Chicago a cappella and the Lira Ensemble is being presented in the spirit of furthering the Chicago’s Polish-Jewish Dialogue, in which Lucyna Migala (founder and artistic director of the Lira Ensemble) and friend, Brian Zakem, have played leading roles in recent years. Performers include the Lira Singers and vocalists who are on the roster of Chicago a cappella.
In keeping with the Polish-Jewish theme, the repertoire will consist of Max Janowski’s short three-movement cantata for solo, choir, and piano, called And They Shall Not Learn War Any More. The major work is the Holocaust Memorial Cantata by Marta Ptaszyńska, professor of composition at the University of Chicago. Her work has lyrics in Polish, English, Hebrew, and Yiddish. Jonathan Miller, Chicago a cappella’s artistic director, will conduct the Janowski cantata; and Mina Zikri, the Lira Ensemble’s director, will conduct the Ptaszyńska cantata.
The concert is offered in the spirit of reconciliation and is a rather unique event in that it is being supported by the Polish, Israeli, and German consulates in Chicago, which we believe has never happened before. Please join us for this event which is being offered free to all who wish to attend.
Please also join the community for the annual program of music and readings in Remembrance of the Shoah, Monday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m. at KAMII.
