For its annual Shabbat Service at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, the Hyde Park Jewish Choral Society joins with the Hallel v'Zimra Conference, a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of Jewish musical performers and academics from around the world at the University of Chicago!
The Friday night service, "A Celebration of American Jewish Music," will feature music by American Jewish composers from as far back as the 19th century and include some new music just released this year! Cantor David Berger of KAM Isaiah Israel has prepared the choir (a mix of volunteer and professional singers) for this truly extraordinary musical service.
From the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel website:
Cantor David Berger, Cantor Roslyn Barak, the Hyde Park Jewish Choral Society, and some of the leading cantors from around the country join together with pianist Joyce Rosenzweig and University organist Thomas Weisflog in a musical Shabbat service, honoring the fact that America has provided a unique home for Jewish cultural and spiritual innovation since the first Jewish immigrants arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654. The opening event of an international conference, Hallel v’Zimra: Jewish Liturgical Music, Present and Future, this service celebrates the music of American Jewish composers, from nineteenth century classics to today’s newest pieces.
