Activities: Sisterhood

OUR SISTERHOOD

Rodfei Zedek Sisterhood continues our 100+ year tradition of enhancing congregational life through programming and fund-raising activities in which everyone can easily participate.  Over the past few years we have moved beyond the traditional “Monday is Sisterhood Day” to include other weekdays, evening, Shabbat, and Sunday afternoon programs. Your enthusiastic response to our membership campaign indicates that you agree that Sisterhood provides a vibrancy to Congregational life.

Before the Holy Days we will post 2010-2011 programs online, including chamber music on February 21 and the Dawn Rubin Torah Study Institute on May 16.  You can keep up with new activities through the congregation’s website and through CRZ emails.

We have two book groups that meet monthly—one Monday mornings and one Wednesday evenings— both of which welcome new readers.   Check their webpages to keep track of future reading choices.

New members and prospective members are always welcome at all Sisterhood functions.  If you aren't currently a Sisterhood member, you can join at any of our open meetings—or you can contact our synagogue office.

Among our other projects, Sisterhood raises funds to subsidize Shabbat and holiday meals for the children of the congregation to make these lovely events more affordable for families to participate in these beautiful communal gatherings.  You can help…

  • by doing your gift and holiday shopping at the Nelson Judaica and Gift Shop, where profits support Sisterhood contributions to the Congregation.  Our terrific team of Sisterhood volunteers provides items both basic and amusing.  Come here first for all your Judaica and gift needs
  • by participating in our High Holy Day Greetings program.  Thanks to all of you who have added your names to the New Years Greetings listed in the fall Rodfei Zedek Bulletin. Thanks to Sheila Schwartz for her fine work on this project!
  • by making honor contributions throughout the year.  Adele Bernstein, our Social Secretary, will send personalized greetings, congratulations, and condolence messages to your family and friends when you make a contribution to Sisterhood in their honor.  Having been a recipient of Adele’s congratulatory notes recently, I can attest to their authenticity, warmth, and personal meaning.
We have two ongoing collections.  If you have unopened individual portion toiletries such as shampoo, hand lotion, toothpaste, etc. cluttering your bathroom counter, please bring them in to the Sisterhood room on the second floor of our synagogue so that we can bring them to a local women’s shelter, where they are appreciated as special gifts affirming the women’s uniqueness at difficult times.  We are also happy to receive worn out mini fluorescent light bulbs and small electronics that should not be put into your trash or recyclable pickups.  We will see that these items, which are hazardous in landfill, will go to the city’s facility on Goose Island so one driver takes many items rather than many people waiting to take one or two items.

May 5771 bring renewed strength to our brethren in Israel and to all of us here.
